Khao Lak is a popular beach destination in Thailand, situated in the Phang Nga Province at the Andaman Sea. This destination is known for its stunning beaches, clear waters, and proximity to national parks. Khao Lak is close to Phuket International Airport (80 kilometers), reason enough for us to put it on the list of easily accessible beaches.

WHAT TO DO
Khao Lak town can be a convenient place to rent scooters or do some shopping. There are 2 great markets in town, the Bang Niang Market and the Build Container Night Market. The latter is less often visited by tourists. It is a nice, lively market with a wide range of restaurants and shops. The Build Container Night Market is open daily from 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM. The Bang Niang Market is open on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

You will find many options for day trips in the area, from diving near Similan Islands or Ko Tachai, to taking cooking, boxing or yoga classes. You can visit one of the elephant sanctuaries, offering ethical and more responsible opportunities to observe and interact with elephants. Khao Lak is a convenient gateway to the Khao Sok National Park, which is one of the oldest rainforests in the world. You can embark on jungle treks, explore limestone formations, visit waterfalls, and enjoy boat trips on Cheow Lan Lake to see the famous floating bungalows.

TRANSPORT
Khao Lak is only one hour drive from Phuket Airport. Taxi service costs between 1000 and 1500 baht. Buses from Phuket to Ranong and Chumphon, and even between Phuket and Bangkok pass through Khao Lak. Drivers will drop you off on the highway, and from this point any additional transportation to the lodgings will generally cost less than 100 baht per person.
