ISLAND
Ko Tarutao is the largest island in the Tarutao National Marine Park, situated near the southern border of Thailand and Malaysia. The island is part of a protected area that includes a group of islands and islets known for their pristine natural beauty and biodiversity.

It is a beautiful remote island with many beaches, however, only 2 of the beaches have accommodations available, the bungalows of which are owned by the national park organization. At this destination you will not find good options for travelers who prefer luxury accommodation options. Lastly, you pay an entrance fee of 200 baht per person to access the island.

WHAT TO DO
Hiking is a popular activity for those looking to explore the island’s interior. Ko Tarutao offers hiking trails through its dense jungles leading to waterfalls, viewpoints, and hidden natural attractions. We recommend renting a mountain bike and explore the hilly island. Road conditions may vary from dirt to concrete, but most of them are in pretty good shape.

Many travelers come here for the wildlife such as monkeys, sea turtles and lizards. Unfortunately, the waters are not the best suitable for snorkeling, however, the great hiking opportunities definitely make up for this in our opinion.

One downside is the possibility of sand fleas on the beaches. Be aware of this and make sure to protect yourself with a special oil and spray. There are no ATMs on the island, so make sure to bring cash.

TRANSPORT
From Bangkok you can take a flight to Trang or Hat Yai. Pakbara Pier is a 2-hour taxi or minibus ride from both towns. The city of Trang is a good starting point to reach Ko Tarutoa. Trang is a friendly provincial town to spend the night. Wander the streets and dine at the night market in Ruenrom Alley, which is about a 15-minute walk from the train station. We recommend going to Trang Happy Trip & Tour, 081 607 2411, next to the train station to arrange your transportation. For a fair price, you will receive professional help with a smile.

A private taxi from Trang to Pakbara is 2000 baht. Shared taxis (250 baht per person) leave around 8:45 in the morning, for which you have to wait for the minibus coming from Krabi. At Pakbara the shared speedboat leaves at 11.30 and cost 600 baht.
